Ahh, summer time. After finishing a fantastic Third Quarterly in Bakersfield where we were charmed by the most famous fairy of them all, “Tinkerbell”, we now have our sights on the Conventions coming up; the International one in Kissimmee Florida and our District Convention in Oxnard.
I am feeling very Optimistic about our district. I believe that our clubs this year have taken actions that have put them in positions of strength. They have rid themselves of the liability of paying for non-contributing members and in the process have brought into our district over 200 new enthusiastic members. This past Quarter our objective was to make our clubs stronger by building up club membership and I can tell that we are reaching out and helping more children because of it. The membership programs that our clubs are doing are working. So to give you a little more incentive, I have come up with a Governor’s Membership Rally patch for your banner. By September 30th any club that increases their membership by three members over the June 1st membership number will be awarded one of these patches. It is also worth noting that our International President Don Sievers has another incentive that allows each club to offer a free membership for one year to any nonmember who has lost their job and cannot afford to join an optimist club.
Now that our clubs have selected their officers for next year they should be thinking about getting prepared for their leadership roles. Governor Elect Jim Morack and his band of Lt. Governors is preparing for some special training on Saturday July 25th in Bakersfield. Your President and Secretary-Treasurer should make plans to attend. There will also be a make up session on Friday, August 14th at the District Convention in Oxnard.
The District Convention, August 14 -16th at the Courtyard Marriott in Oxnard, we will be electing our Governor for the 2010-2011 Optimist Year. The theme for this Quarterly is the “Swinging Sixties” so be prepared to put on your tye-dyed T-shirt, bell-bottoms or dress up as your favorite/notorious character of the 60’s. At Saturday’s luncheon you will be entertained by the Magic Castle’s voted “best of the year Magician”. The evening entertainment will be songs from the Sixties by “Smoke and Mirrors”. Saturday morning before the business session, we are going to have a Recognition Breakfast where you are encouraged to select someone from your club that you would like to give special recognition to. At the Sunday brunch there will be a veteran’s recognition program to honor those who have served our country.
The training at the last Quarter was awesome and I expect it to be just as incredible in Oxnard. Last Quarter Nancy Truglio gave a fantastic seminar on Grant Writing and is planning on giving another seminar next Quarter on Public Speaking. There will be more on how to set up a 501C3 Foundation within your club and some seminars on other optimist programs. For questions about reservations call Mark Weinsoff at (805) 252-4502.
Michelle and I look are looking forward to seeing you at the Quarterly. Meanwhile, have a great summer.
